Elk Island National Park

As part of our New Year adventure plan Ryan and I took ourselves out to Elk Island national park one sunny afternoon.

It wasn’t particularly warm out but the sun was shining and we were ready to explore.

From our new apartment it surprisingly only took us a little over 30 minutes to drive to the park. Just before the entrance we saw a small group of Bison, but that would be the only wildlife we experienced while there.

While we were paying for our park pass the girl at the desk told us about a few trails we could walk/hike on and a small loop to drive around that USUALLY allows people at least a glimpse of the Bison herds in the area.  Like I said before, we didn’t see any. I guess they were all snoozing somewhere else. We did find some lovely red Adirondack chairs to take pictures in though.

Further up the road we parked in what would be the campground/beach area if it was summertime. Directly ahead is the small island that people take canoes out to, but it was very clear that people have been walking and snowshoeing out there over the ice as well. I am very timid about walking on ice because 1. I fall easily enough without the ground being slippery and 2. I’m terrified of it cracking. The point is I walked out anyway. The snow cover kept it from being at all slippery and all the other people on it gave me enough confidence that it was thick enough to hold me.

The island itself is very small and only takes a few minutes to walk around the whole thing and beyond that there isn’t really anything to see on it. We took a few pictures, enjoyed the view from a hill and I climbed a fallen tree.

Back across the ice we went in search of our hiking trail. We initially took one wrong turn and ended up at a dead end, but saw a woodpecker along the way so it’s all in good fun anyway.

Once we got on the proper path it was quite nice. Warm enough in the sunshine to make me regret wearing a big jacket but cold enough in the shade to remember that it isn’t spring yet. The first part of the path is along the edge of the lake over what I assume would be like a marshy wetland area in the summer months and the second half of the loop is more inland and tree covered. Most times we stuck to the path but once or twice we wandered off to see what was between the trees.

Having made it through the paths we found ourselves back at the parking lot considering if we would do another hike. We still had enough daylight but I found that I was an uncomfortable mix of too hot and too cold all at once. We wore both feeling pretty sore from the amount of hills we had to climb on this hike as well.

In the end we decided to call it a day and start heading home. We will definitely be coming back here for more hiking and certainly for some canoeing in the summer!

2016

As I do every year, I’m going to do a little review of last year’s goals and also set some new ones for 2016.

In 2015 I planned to:
-Get a better sense of who I am, what I want, etc..
I would mostly qualify this one as a success. I discovered a desire to pursue nursing as a career.

-Take more adventures
I definitely get a passing grade on this one. I finally got to Hawaii, re-visited Nova Scotia, went to the mountains and the lake, explored my city and so much more.

-Stop waiting
Meaning: grab more opportunities and make life happen. I think I did this, especially in the job department.

-Less phone, more reading.
Fail, fail, fail!! I would still like to use my phone less, but after January I hardly picked up a book at all!!

-Get outdoors
A+ (See adventures)

-Work on my fitness
I would give this one a C- … I did run in the summer and I’ve done some hiking, but generally speaking I wasn’t even close to where I wanted to be.

-Meet new people
Considering I started a new relationship and a new job, this one I did pretty well at!

-Minimize my belongings
I have certainly shrunk down from what I did have, but I still have more than I would prefer.

-Save $$$
I spent 4 months not working, and in that time I was doing quite a bit of travelling and therefore I spent a LOT, but when I started working again I got back on track very quickly. Another trip is in sight!!

-More blogging
I’m sad to say, I didn’t do nearly as well as I wanted. Some months were really good and others were non-existent…

****

As for 2016, I have some big plans for myself this year!
  1. FINALLY go to Iceland. I’ve been thinking about this trip since before I got home from Europe in 2013.
  2. Start doing yoga again. I was once doing it 7 days/week and I loved that.
  3. Find a job that is “permanent”
  4. Continue to minimize my belongings
  5. Save $$$$
  6. Take a trip alone
  7. Go on more NEW adventures. Example: I’ve been to Jasper a million times, I’ve been to Banff multiple times and somehow I’ve never been to Canmore. Go new places.
  8. Learn to scuba dive. Another long time goal.
  9. Be less concerned about getting dirty! I want to kneel on the ground to take pictures, sit in the grass and climb a tree without considering the sap.
  10. Slow down. I do everything so rapidly that I often miss the point. Eat slower, take my time with projects, walk the pace of everyone else. Life is not a race.
It will be A+ all around this year!

2015 Recap

This past year I experienced the joy of some of my highest highs and survived the pain and heartache of my lowest lows.
I lost someone that meant so much to me.
I found someone new who brings me so much renewed happiness.
I discovered things and made new goals for myself.
Many adventures were had.
So much heartache and so much love, hand in hand.

January -
January brought about some big changes. I met Ryan. I spent my time outside of work getting to know him. We explored the city at night and went right to breakfast in the morning.
I booked a trip to Hawaii with my friends, no need for a second thought.

February -
Ryan and I spent Valentine's Day together. I got a camera. This was the beginning of what's is now one of our favorite hobbies, exploring and photographing.
We go out day and night to see what we can capture. Edmonton's skyline, the Muttart Conservatory, St. Albert..
At the end of the month I took a leave from both my jobs and went to Jasper with Ryan for the weekend.

March -
Back from Jasper I took that Hawaii trip. An absolutely amazing trip , I've wanted to go to Hawaii since I was 9 years old.
Back from Hawaii, I moved out of my condo and put everything in storage.
Next, I said my good-byes again and left for Regina where I would be living for the foreseeable future.

April -
Life in Regina is rewarding but also stressful and difficult. I spend time with family, write my blog and finally start running again.
Every few weeks I drive the 4 hours to North Battleford to meet Ryan for the weekend and we continue to have new adventures.
We find abandoned homes, a functioning lighthouse, a beach and playground.

May -
Things get more difficult in Regina. I am as helpful as I can be but I'm not really as tough as I pretend to be.
I take a weekend trip back to Edmonton to see friends and family, also to get a few things ready for my next upcoming trip.
Ryan and I visit Fort Edmonton Park, one of my favorite places.

June -
I now spend all day everyday at the hospital. I'm the visitor not the patient but I think that just makes it scarier for me.
I learn a lot from my time there and discover something new. I want to be a nurse.
Leaving now is the least ideal timing, but it's time to drive home to fly to Nova Scotia with Ryan, a trip we've been planning for a few months.
2 perfect weeks are spent exploring the coast, meeting Ryan's friends and family, eating seafood and just generally enjoying life. Also, became obsessed with sea glass..

July -
The beginning of the July is really busy. I start working again for the first time since march.
Ryan and I swim in lakes, walk the river valley, play mini golf and bowl, go to Jurassic forest, the Devonian Botanic garden and check out markets.
July 23 - The most amazing woman is lost. My best friend, mentor, vacation buddy and the person who always picks up the phone when I need an ear. Grama.
My life ends for a while as I try to cope and understand.

August -
Life must now continue and I find distractions to be very comforting.
My friends, Ryan and I go camping in Jasper. We hike, swim and explore via canoe.
Return to Regina.
I took Ryan to Regina Beach, another of my favorite places. Who knew you could find sea glass on the beach of a freshwater lake???
Back in Edmonton we almost mastered to Corn Maze. Almost.
After 5 years I finally cut my hair. 10 inches to be sent to the Canadian Cancer Society.

September -
A visit to Drumheller to see the Dinosaurs, Hoodoos and the museum.
I left both of my jobs again, this time to start a new one. A good one.

October -
A visit to the pumpkin patch where I chose exactly what I wanted and picked it right off the vine. I also carved that pumpkin far to early in the month.
I turned 24. I am solidly in my "mid" 20's.
Another visit to Regina to visit my Grampa.
On Halloween while I was running around with friends playing hide-and-seek covered in fake blood my nephew was born. I am now an Auntie x3!!

November -
Ryan and I begin the search for an apartment together.
Christmas events start to kick-off around the city and we make our way out to see a few.

December -
Moving in to the new place takes up a lot of my time when I'm not working.
Ryan and I make hand-made Christmas cards for our families.
I build and awesome Lighthouse gingerbread house for work. It does not win the competition.
Christmas gifts were mostly made instead of purchased this year.
After looking and looking for the entire year Ryan finally gets to see the Northern Lights.

Happy New Year!!

January 1, 2016 - The End of the World

On New Year's Day Ryan and I wanted to get outside and have an adventure, our first of the year. We've been planning to visit somewhere called "the end of the world" for quite some time now but we haven't gotten around to it.

Edmonton's "end of the world" is just a huge broken retaining wall overlooking the river valley but it has become a big thing here. It's not the safest place so the city has put up 'no trespassing' signs but haven't made it inaccessible.

With a little help from Google we were able to pin the location of the wall and get there fairly easily. From where we parked we initially walked the wrong direction. I guess that's part of the fun in having an adventure though!! It also lead us to the pile of silver balls that we have been meaning to visit as well. This art instillation is a matter of some disagreement around here. Some people love them, most people hate them (and there huge price tag) and a few are quite indifferent.
I don't love them, but I have to admit, seeing them close up changed my opinion a bit. It's actually pretty cool.. The pile is hollow, which you would never know from afar but when you peak between each sphere it allows a brilliant reflective look at what would be the coolest hide-out around, if there was a way in...

From the shiny balls on the hill we turned back to walk in the direction we should have gone originally.
We quickly came to a fork in the path. One way leading along a paved walking trail full of families enjoying the sun and one path leading through the trees along the river. We chose the second and got moving along.

We were passed periodically by small groups of winter-time bikers and every time I was baffled at how they were able to stay upright on a trail like this when I can barely stay up on a smooth flat road.

Along the way we climbed, slid and jumped. We talked and laughed about all kinds of things and generally enjoyed the bright sun of the new year.
After about an hour of walking we came to our destination. The bottom side of it, but that's close enough.. right?

Not really. We took some pictures and enjoyed the view but quickly realized that there was no way to get to the top from where we were. Back the way we came we found a very steep tree covered hill and started to make our way up. Without the help of my new boots I never would have made it, but the tread carried me all the way up. The nearby trees helped a bit too.

At the top once again it took us a bit by surprise. We could have parked right there, walked for about 1 minute and been exactly where we planned. There isn't any fun in that though so we weren't disappointed.

Back on our journey, we slid down a small but steep hill on our heels/bums and we had arrived. The End of the World.
The massive columns and ledge make for a great viewing point over the river but it's quite scary to be up there. It's clear to see how much larger and more solid the wall was by the broken column bases. To be honest we stayed for very little time, it was uncomfortable and I know plenty of beautiful views throughout the city that don't make me feel like my world really might end if I step out too far.

We made a great first adventure of 2016 and I can't wait to see what else is in store. I think this is the year I may finally get to one of my dream destinations, but you will have to follow along to find out!!

Happy New Year!
